Fort Worth Zoo Field Trip

The kindergarten class took a field trip to the Fort Worth Zoo today. They invited the families to join the class, so my mom and I went with Troy. I assumed that it would be one of those trips where the teachers take the kids around the zoo and talk to them about the animals. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Moments after entering the zoo, every family dispersed in a different direction, and we were left on our own. We tried to stay with some of Troy’s friends, but as usual everyone was in their little family cliques, and we couldn’t find anywhere to latch on. So, we enjoyed the zoo on our own. Occasionally, we crossed paths with one of his friends, and we’d hang out for a few minutes before they’d head off without us again. It was a little disappointing. I keep hoping for more from this group, and they always let me down. I just can’t figure out how to break into the already established group.

But we managed to have a good time despite that. Troy enjoyed the goat petting zoo, of course. My mom thought the gorilla’s sticking their bums at us were hilarious. I found the baby hippo swimming back and forth across his tank to be peaceful and calming. We all loved the giraffe area. We even rode the little train…because all of Troy’s classmates were doing it, and we were trying to get in with the crowd.

The funniest part was that I was pretty much the only dad there. All of the rest of the kids were accompanied by their moms. Maybe that was the issue. Maybe if my wife had been there, we would have had better luck. I can almost guarantee it, because she would have made sure that they didn’t ignore us!
