The Houstonian Fall: Bellaire

Today was a travel day, but there was still one more place that I wanted to go…home. Or at least where home used to be during my childhood. So, we packed up, checked out of our hotel, and headed to Bellaire. I hadn’t been back in years, and I was amazed at how much everything had changed. We found a little cafe called the Bellaire Coffee Shop and stopped for breakfast. It had an old diner feel to it, and it was filled with “regulars,” older patrons who came in every day for food and connection.

Our waitress was Dimetria, who ended up being from the Island of Chios, which is a large island east of Athens, Greece. My wife was elated to find yet another Greek to converse with. In fact, the diner itself was run by Dimetria’s Greek brother-in-law and his son. Everyone was extremely nice, and the food was good. The best part was when we were leaving. I saw the owner’s son walk up to an older couple and offer to pay for their breakfast, just because they were such loyal customers. It’s nice to see goodness and caring like that still in the world.

After that, we toured around Bellaire, so I could show my son the houses where I grew up (fun fact, after my parents got divorced, my mother and father ended up living on the same street just on opposite sides of the freeway), the elementary school I attended, and the high school where I spent my awkward years. It was a quick tour, because we had a long drive ahead of us, but it was good to reconnect with my roots.

And now, we head to home…
